A second commission, kitties?!

Updated: Jun 12

Hello Hen House readers!

I have an update on something from my last post. That storage unit has been delayed for a whole month! Realizing the wait would be too long, I tackled that bundle of free wood scraps in my car.

Laying out each piece on the ground. Taking my time with each one, dusting the sawdust off and checking for mold and nails. For now the smaller pieces are still in the car and the rest are in my outside closet.

This is nothing new. From materials to projects I always have stuff in my car. Recently it even lead to my second commission.

My commission came the best way, organically. I was getting something from my car when a neighbor came over for a chat. In this way, women can be gifted sellers. We love the small talk and having lots of acquaintances, is great for networking.

I was only going out to my car for a second, so I almost stepped out in my pajamas. Glad I didn't!

We started talking and I realized I had a golden opportunity to show her some of the things I made. When I showed her the k-cup holder, her eyes widened. "You made that... from scratch?" It's like she saw me in a whole new light.

She even called over her husband.

It was when she saw a keychain charm, her own opportunity presented itself. I made two charms for her. What did she request?

Kitties!

Here are the original pictures, the designs, and the finished results.

I even added their names on the back.

She absolutely loved the results! I'll wait a week and when we organically talk again, I'll ask for a testimonial.

I learned a lot from this experience.

Design wise, I spent a lot of time on details that didn't show up in the finished results:

  • Lines ending in points

  • Adding the kitty's name to a nametag

None of it showed up in the final result. The extra details had another problem.

I showed the client the design before it was printed and those extra details might have given her a false impression of what the final design was going to look like.

Engagement wise, I learned to always be ready for a sale. Not that anyone needs to be pushy, but insuring I'm always dressed like I could potentially talk to a client is a great start.

Reminder Events have changed. My engagement with the Lowell Folk Festival may be less of a "table to sell" and more of an "information booth". We will know soon as the coordinator will tell us within two weeks.

I've added an event!

Christ Church United Yard Sale on June 21st from 8-1.

  • I MIGHT be selling at Lowell Folk Festival. fingers crossed!

  • I WILL be selling at Christ Church United.

At Lowell Makes

Good news! While I was printing the commission, I found the "Meet Our Makers" banner. I set it up right in the lobby. Anybody coming to tour Lowell Makes Maker Space will see this while waiting.

The want for a similar banner is now being asked for. One that shows all the shops and what captain to contact for checkouts.

Next post, I have a very surprising trip scheduled for Monday. I can't wait to tell you all about it.
