The Summer Squeeze

After catching all of my new followers up, it was time to catch up myself.
Kids go to school in a week. That means lots of trips to the thrift store to drop off shoes that are now too small, and furniture that's too big.
Ice cream social and Popsicles in the park were two events put on by my kids schools. Meet the teachers and tryout for fall activities.
Which brings me to my oldest, she tried out for the fall play and got casted! She will be playing Rapunzel's Prince for the play 'Into The Woods Jr.'
Since summer is ending soon my husband and I fit as much as we could into this week. A beach day, Peach picking, Hibachi, pool time and a 3 story Arcade!
You know I was kinda feeling guilty I didn't have more work to report but there it is, I was having some much needed family time.
That being said, I did get into the shop this week...

The Woodworker Problem
Fellow Woodworkers - Stop me if you've heard this one before...
Since starting woodworking my husband has had lots of 'honey-dos' to give me. The latest one is Enclosed Shelves.
I started designing and here comes the request.
Husband - Can you make it so the windows can be removable?
Me - Well ya, but I have to include a lip for them to sit against and hardware to hold them in.
Husband - Great, can you also custom them to the wall size? Some should be longer than others.
Me - That means a lot more work, I can't just cut a bunch of the same size
Husband - Great, can you also make some shorter to account for the vents in the celling?
Me - I don't think they will be in the way, it will only stick out an inch over the vent.
Husband - Great, thanks hun!
Me - I do have an event coming up and I really should concentrate on... and he's gone.
So here I am, working on these enclosed shelves. They really will look good when I'm done and we will get lots more room in the house.
The Shelves Work In Progress
All the 'bones' of the shelf have been cut. A little fine tuning is in order but this is great progress!
Vertical Horizontal Back Horizontal 3D
It's a bit hard to visualize. Here they are all together.
One nail from the back will go through all pieces.
At this point I've learned a few things.
My design will work. Awesome!
Hardwood like Cherry is very difficult to fine tune with a chisel.
That beings said, I think this will go together really easily. The plan:
Make the top first since I know it will be square.
Attach all hardware like picture frame holders
Then do all my glue-ups, using the square top as a guide.
Until next time :)
