One thing leads to another

Updated: Jul 1

Hello Hen House readers!

Philosophy of business is on my mind today. What is my brand exactly? Are there items that just don't fit? Should I say yes to everything?

These thoughts crossed my mind at the Church yard sale when my event table neighbor offered an opportunity. I could sell her jewelry.

She is willing to let me have the pieces and pay her only after they sell. How could I pass up and opportunity like that?

I made a plan...

I'll look for turquoise and earth tones to complement my country and homesteading brand.

Her home was beautiful! In her basement is where all the jewelry was. She bought out a warehouse so I don't exaggerate when I say, she has thousands of pieces!

As I dug though the boxes of treasure I thought to myself, 'How did I get here?'

It's only because I was talking to neighbors that I even realized the church was putting on the yard sale. And only a passing whim that I signed up for the church yard sale in the first place.

Furthermore, it may only be because my daughter and I left late that day, that we even got that table. It seems people chose there tables and I got the one that was left.

Keeping to the color tones I wanted was harder than I expected. So many beautiful pieces! I also had my daughter and her showing me a bunch of them.

"This one is wonderful" , "How about this one?"

Here is what I came away with...

Necklaces have the best color pallet with wood acrylic and shells. The bracelets got away from me more that any other category. Still pretty but not as within brand.

Before leaving I had quite the surprise! Something that got me to write all of this 'one thing leads to another' post.

As we were saying our good byes, I was explaining about Lowell Makes and how that's where I do my woodworking.

"Wood working hu? I know someone with a lumber mill."

"Oh really" I said. "I would love any scraps they have"

Turns out the lumber mill friends always have slabs of wood and scraps. So many they don't know what to do with them. They have been looking for woodworkers who can use all the extras.

If this was an anime I would have fell over right there. With my contact with Red Antler Apothecary farm that has a lumber mill on it, and this new lumber mill contact, surly one of them will work out with discount or free wood.

I remember the original questions I ask myself and came to an answer. In business, if a door opens you must walk thought it. Yes to every opportunity! You never know what will lead to what.

Next post I should be full of the creative process as I try bending wood with kerf bending.
