Collection of things - to a Home

Updated: Jul 18

Hello Hen House readers! I would like to start today with a bit of backstory.

In 2006 I graduated from D.A.V.E. School located on the back lot of Universal Studios Florida. I worked on my projects with the school, namely "Teddy Scares" and a short Star Trek film featuring George Takei.

At that point I had a choice:

  • Move to California for work.

  • Move to Massachusetts with my boyfriend to get married and start a family

The career was promising. Many of my friends worked on Avatar (the blue alien one) and I was on the phone with the team working on Captain America.

Perhaps I said the wrong thing, perhaps the universe knew it wasn't where I was suppose to be. I tried and tried but just never broke through.

As the years went by I saw that industry wasn't treated right. Some of you may remember how the special effects team for Life of Pi was treated.

Workers in that industry are not paid enough and no long term career existed. You are always looking for work.

Of course now that AI is taking over, that industry isn't needed as much and maybe not at all soon.

Long story short I'm glad I didn't make it down that path. I have a full family of 4 happy kids, instead of a dying career.

Starting a business now, after family, has presented lets say, learning opportunity's. Working is easy when they are going to school. A bit harder during the summer.

So this summer I've been concentrating on the home.

4 growing kids in a 2 bedroom condo presents it's own challenges. Re-arranging and cleaning takes a lot of time. This summer I set out to make my house a Home, instead of a collection of stuff.

A collection of things, to a Home:

Some of you may remember that I've been waiting for a storage unit to open. It took over a month but it finally did. I walked in, so excited that all my stuff would be a stones through away.

As I saw the unit, my brain broke.

Staring at this unit I realized a few things. 10x10 is not the same between different companies. It looked really really small.

Left is my current unit and Right is the 'new' unit. Believe it or not, both units measured the same left side to right side.

I knew my unit was bigger just by looking. I had to measure to be sure. Turns out we have a 10/14 unit, not a 10x10.

That being said, the new unit measured 10x10 wall to wall. Excluding those huge bars that jut out on both sides of the unit.

That plus, new unit was much shorter with a celling resting just above my head and lacked any light source. Light in the photo is coming from the hallway, not above.

Too many negatives forced me to keep my current unit. It's a bit of a drive but as you will see, I need the room.

It was finally time to get my house in order.

Reminder, I still have a ton of wood in my house and car from helping a fellow Lowell Makes member.

And I'm moving my years of built up crafting supplies.

And And I need to switch my kids clothes to summer attire.

Lots of work to do.

I found a bunch of free shelves (the black ones in the photo). They were dirty and being thrown away, plus, they were missing some connecting rods.

I cleaned them up and used PVC (with a bit of Dremel work) to fix them.

As a gift from above, I also found a desk that's perfect for storing my wood scraps.

I'm happy with how the unit is turning out. I can get to everything and it's all organized.

For some size context. The wood on the left is so tall that it hits my ceiling at home and can't be stored upright.

At home, since getting all that crafting stuff out, I have much more room on my shelf and in my closet.

In fact, the shelf looks so good, I decided to take it out of the closet and display it.

It feels so good to finally have a proper pantry!

Through all of this I've been working on my kerf wood bending and soap holder. Post on that when it's done.
